Nan Talk: Bee Witch

On Sunday we attended a Halloween party which had been postponed courtesy of Sandy. Hannah's witch costume is kinda itchy, so she chose to wear leggings and a long-sleeved shirt underneath.  It's a bit unruly--long skirt, high collar, hat...

So she chose to use last year's bee costume so she could be comfortable while playing games and decorating pumpkins.

There was a professional children's performer who had everyone singing and dancing. It was so funny to watch Hannah inch her way up to the front so she could be on the "stage".  The girl loves the limelight.

After that fun, we had a catered dinner. It was a great treat! Every family brought a dessert. Hannah picked these guys for our contribution (she found them in an American Girl magazine).

So sweet.  Literally.

After we gorged ourselves, it was Trunk or Treat.   Hannah switched into her witch costume for hauling the loot!   She also offered a rendition of "Defying Gravity" to her fans, with musical accompaniment courtesy of the Prius.

Of course, someone mentioned that they thought she was a bee.
Without missing a beat, she said, "I was "Bee-witched!"

Crack me.

(that's what Hannah used to say when she was little--she never added the "up".)

Defying Gravity!! 31/31

I know I owe you one more post, but I know you're a forgiving lot.  Hannah and I are working on a post together, and we promise to get it up soon.

Today was a fun day!

We started with Pumpkin carving:

Hannah's punkin' skillz have improved in the past year!  I guess this is one way to assess fine motor proficiency.

But then we were interrupted with a gas leak in the attic (one of the furnaces is up there).  The Gasman helped me fix it up!  Free!  Yay!!!

So we continued on....Hannah did all the straight lines and I tidied up the details. Hannah really liked this Great Horned Owl.

Soooo...I forgot to tell Hannah to change our Jack O'Lantern's name.
She named him Horny.
Of course, that was the first thing out of her mouth when she walked into her art class this afternoon...

Way to go, Mom!

We scurried off to guitar lessons--Hannah's making progress!  Slow and steady, but she's picking up the tempo.   Soon we'll be able to give you a video of the rockin' Bird!

Quick dinner and out the door for trick or treats!

Hannah is Elphaba.  If you don't know who that is, Elphaba is the real name of the Witch of the West in the Broadway show "Wicked".

She's singing "Defying Gravity", her favorite song.

Here she's playing the part of the Wicked Witch of the West in the Wizard of Oz.

She'll get your little dog, too!

Watch out Dorothy!!!

A satisfied candy hoarder is now watching TV and consuming as much as she can.  Then the rest of us can forage when she goes to bed.

#30/31 Boo!

Well, I bet you were expecting Hannah to be Pippi Longstocking!

Nope!  I was hoping for twin Pippis, but Hannah was not going for it.

She wanted to be a clown.   She had a good time trick or treating with a couple of her Southern friends (that's Shea who is the witch!).   Unfortunately, this is about the best picture that I got.

Tomorrow we'll be at our science camp, and won't have any internet access for several days (wouldn't you expect scientists to have internet access???)   I'm one post shy of finishing all 31 posts.  I actually have the post ready to go; it's a guest blogger, and I needed her final OK to post it.  But my computer won't let me send email (even webmail!) if I'm using someone else's internet provider.  So it's going to be later in the week before I get it posted.  It will be worth the wait!

Thanks for reading all through October!  It was both fun and exhausting!  I'm much more of a 1-2x a week blogger.

Odds and Evens Ends.

Even though all this stuff is WAY past due, here are some odds and ends that I think will fall through the cracks if I don't get it posted soon. So be prepared for a non sequitur post!

1. Hannah (and I) have been thoroughly enjoying her new Girl Scout Troop. There are about 6 or 7 girls in the Juniors, a couple of Cadettes and 4 Brownies. I primarily work with the Brownies (no, I am not a leader, I just pretend I am one, yet, I have no responsibility, which keeps me very happy!). By keeping myself busy with the younger girls, I am out of Hannah's way, but still available to lend a hand if necessary. Hannah is doing well, starting to make friends. All the Juniors have jobs in running the troop, and Hannah is the Troop Photographer. It's a job she loves and takes very seriously. So far the girls have earned 2 badges and 1 activity patch. Which is three times as much as she earned in 6 months at the old troop.

Last week there was a Halloween party, that was actually hosted by her previous troop (uh-oh!). It was half-(insert past-tense expletive here=derriere), as I was expecting. Most of the girls who attended from our troop were disappointed, but Hannah thought it was great! Of course, she had never been to a Halloween party before. They had a cupcake walk, played musical chairs, had a "fortune teller" and a couple of other games. Here's Hannah on the cupcake walk gallop.
She was concentrating pretty hard!

2. Kate called last week, and emailed briefly today. She is staying with a family in a town. The family has 5 children, ages 18 months-13 years. The oldest three are girls, then the little ones are boys. The family is pretty well off as things go in Jordan. Kate is enjoying the homemade food much more than the "dorm" food she had earlier. She says that her host mother literally shoves food into Kate's mouth. I guess they think she is too thin....but how can they tell if she's wearing all those loose clothes? Water is a problem. The family receives delivery of water once a week and they have to ration it to last. That means there are showers only on the day of delivery. That's taking some adjustment on Kate's part! To use the internet she has to take a 20 minute bus ride to get to an internet cafe. They don't have wireless, so she has to use the cafe computers. Hence, no pictures until she can use her own computer.

Kate has 6 hours of language and culture lessons every day (maybe Saturday off? I haven't figured out which is the day of rest). Two of the days she travels to a larger town to have classes with the entire Peace Corps class (42 volunteers total, but only 6 in her smaller town). She is surprised how much she is enjoying not having to deal with men! She says it makes things much easier! (May I now put in a plug for single gender colleges? I went to a women's college and not only was it great fun (plenty of male visitors on the weekends), but it was a very nurturing environment. I even met James there!)

3. Chris is doing well at school. I know he's working hard because he usually is in the library when I call him! His friends gave him a surprise party at midnight. Which was good, since his cafeteria birthday pie arrived a day late and his gift from us was nearly a week late! We are ready to have him home for Thanksgiving--it's getting a little quiet around here!

4.Hannah has been doing some cooking and she wants to add a "Cookin' with Nan" feature on the blog. I have plenty of footage, I just haven't had time or energy to sort through it!

5. Hannah had her last soccer session today. I couldn't find her warm-up jacket, so I looked around for a sweatshirt. I found one of Kate's, and hoped it would do. Sure enough, it perfectly fits Hannah. James and I were remarking about it, and then I realized that the girls are definitely shaped differently, but they are only 7 pounds apart.

6. Swimming lessons are going full speed ahead. Hannah is a "sinker", but she's finally getting the hang of the backstroke. That left arm isn't behaving quite as well as the right, but she's moving, and not sinking!

7. The day Kate left for Jordan we had tickets to...

Disney on Ice! Hannah invited "Sheena-my-partner-from-dance". The three of us had a great time. I was surprised that I actually liked the show! Sheena kept saying she felt like she was 7 years old again! It was lots of fun, and great to see the two of them together again. (You might recall Sheena from Hannah's dance performance here.)

And there you have it. More than you wanted or needed. And, if you can believe it, I deleted two other items, to save you from incessant Hannah-ing.

Slim Cooley...the Mustang Herder

I'm here to tell ya, that Slim Cooley is one tough cowboy.
He's a Mustang Herder.
And the best cowboy in these parts...

There's nothing worse than gettin' the news that some rustlers have run off with your best mustangs....

Slim Cooley will sit back and ponder.

He can always come up with a plan....

Goin' out to catch him some rustlers and free his mustangs!
No more Tricks! Only Treats!

Yee Haw!!!!

(That there's Slim's trusty steed, Tappie, a fine mare.)

Now, just for Catherine, over at The Daily Lois, heeeeere's Murray Cook for you!

No, Hannah wasn't Murray for Halloween, she was Murray for her 8th birthday! It was a crazy mixed up day, but we started with a trip to Richmond (before we lived here!) to the Children's Museum. This is the only picture that shows her Wiggles pants. Remember, this was back before there were Wiggles clothes and costumes (not that they make them in size 8 anyhow). A little red electrical tape works pretty well. At least for the short term...then it's a sticky situation.

Much later, after many unexpected delays, we had our family party. At around 10 p.m.

As I have mentioned in the past, she has broken her Wiggles addiction. We are not missing Murray much.

Can't keep up!

Oh, I'm about 20 posts behind...at this rate you'll probably see Hannah's costume in January! I've started to make little notes so I could remember all I wanted to write--Hannah's been pretty funny these days, but I think I "organized" them. Probably to the recycle bin.

We've been on the go pretty much non-stop. So far we're healthy, though so many friends have contracted the flu. I still haven't made a decision on the shot, which is fine, since it isn't available for us yet. Makes it easier to not make a decision!

We did manage to carve pumpkins today. Hannah did a great job! She has always been interested, but her help has not always been the kind of help that actually helps. This year, however, she cut the "lids" off the pumpkins and did most of the scooping. She tackled the slime and goo, and even did a little bit of the faces.

We had two pumpkins for the record books--in Hannah's pumpkin there were sprouting seeds! One sprout actually looked a little green. It was kind of like a pregnant pumpkin! Then, my pumpkin had such thick flesh that it was practically solid!

Now then, here is a short walk (very) down memory lane...

Age 8

Age 9

Age 10

As you can see, Hannah takes her costuming seriously. I'll give you a hint for this year's costume: It's her favorite character from The Magic Treehouse Ghost Town at Sundown. I doubt there are many of you out there who are familiar with the story...let me know if you've got a guess!

Preparing...

This was Nan's idea. She picked out the photos and I helped her make them fit in.

Totally. Hysterical.

In French, Chat, Chapeau

The sun did not shine.
It was too wet to play.
So we sat in the house
All that cold, cold wet day.

NOT.

The sun did shine.
It was a beautiful day.
We went out of the house--
It was time to play!
With Tiggr, a cowgirl,
an astronaut too,
The Cat in the Hat
Knew just what to do.

Door to door, face to face, she really was handy.
Those neighbors really gave out way too much candy!
It tasted so good, it really was yummy,
but now she's in bed with a small ache in her tummy.

Earlier today....

Bunsen took his pumpkin carving very seriously. (love those seeds love those seeds)

Last year Hazel was mortified in her rooster costume. She was so embarrassed.
Things this year were just as humiliating.
Sorry Hazel. Better luck next year.
